For Employers: 6 Ways to Attract and Retain High Quality Staff

At TAI, we’re experts in helping managers, operators, and hiring managers build the best teams for their companies. We partner with companies in many different industries to lead their end-to-end recruitment services. In this blog, we’re giving away a few of trade secrets, i.e. our tips on how we help companies find and keep the best of the best.

Our recruitment strategy (and strategy for creating a healthy, engaging company culture) is based on our philosophy below, which we encourage you to implement in your company right away:
  1. Only hire A Players. Seems like an obvious tip for hiring an employee, but you’d be surprised how many employers don’t do this. When you’re reviewing applications, focus on candidates who have the most potential, i.e. skills that you can cultivate within them so that they stay engaged,  productive, and motivated for the long-term.
  2. Give Employees Autonomy. Your employees want to be treated like adults. When you treat them like adults instead of “worker bees” who need constant management, you’ll get the best work and attitude out of them. Empower your employees with things like flexible work hours, continuing education opportunities, and opportunities to lead projects.
  3. Develop Your Manager. Many employers tend to focus on managing and developing lower level staff, as they have the least experience in the working world, and the most amount of time to meet their potential. But we recommend that you spend time developing your mid-level managers, too. They’re interested in excelling, and the more skilled and independent they become, the more you can rely on them.
  4. Fail Up. We believe that failure is productive, if you learn from it, and we encourage you to adapt this perspective in your company. Encourage your staff to fail often and early, then gain insight from it. You may even host a “fail of the week” meeting with your team, during which each staff member mentions a moment where they made some kind of mistake and what they learned from it. This encourages staff to learn from each other, and helps you learn where your team needs support.
  5. Celebrate and engage. Make a point to learn the dates of the major milestones in your employees’ lives, like birthdays, work anniversaries, etc. Along with celebrating milestones, we also encourage you to say “thank you” or “great job” when your employees finish a project, complete a goal, or offer their help to a colleague who needs assistance with a task.
  6. Have fun. Ever hear the saying, “Work hard, play hard”? Well, we believe in it at TAI, and we encourage you to adopt it at your own company. Your employees need to spend time with you and with each other in non-work settings, in order to recharge, feel more connected to the company’s mission, and return to work feeling refreshed, engaged, and motivated.
